Tai Chi

Tai Chi, or Tiaji, was originally developed in China a few hundred years ago. It is a type of martial art that is primarily known for its health benefits, including means for dealing with tension and stress. Among the martial arts, there are two basic types: the hard martial arts (external system) and the soft martial arts (internal system). The hard martial arts include Shao Lin, Karate and Kung Fu (or Wushu). They emphasize linear movements, breathing combined with sound, strength, speed and hard power impact contact, jumps, and kicks. Examples of the soft martial arts are Ba Gua and TaiJi.

Styles

There are five major styles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, each named after the Chinese family from whom they originated:
  • Chen style
  • Yang style
  • Wu style of Wu Ch'uan-yu (Wu Quanyuo) and Wu Chien-ch'uan (Wu Jianquan)
  • Wu or Wu/Hao style of Wu Yu-hsiang (Wu Yuxiang)
  • Sun style

Chen Style (Founder: Chen Wangting)
The Chen Style is divided into two kinds frames: the old frame and the new frame. The old frame original has seven kind of styles, pass through unceasingly transmit with the refinement, finally has formed the Chen type Taijiquan the first and second groups style. The new frame repertoire also has two kinds; One kind of its sequence of operation are the same as the old frame, but the posture and turned circle are smaller than older frame. It specialized in:

Yang Style (Yang Chengfu)
Yang Lushan (1800-1873) who came from Hebei Yungnan, is a child-worker in Henan Wen County Chen village Chen family, learned Taiji from Chen Changhsing. Wu style of Wu Quanyuo and Wu Jianquan

His son Wu Chienchuan (1870-1942), in inherits his father to pass on Taijiquan in the foundation Yang type small rack, he unceasingly to revise, caused the fist type continuously, the fist does not jump, the compatibility is more widespread, the latter person called it as Wu type small rack, the Wu type Taijiquan which namely at present spreads.

Wu or Wu/Hao Style (Founder: Wu Yuhsiang)
Born in Yongding, Hebei Province, China at the end of the Qing Dynasty, Wu Yuhsiang (1782-1880) initially was instructed by Yang Lushan to study Chen type old frame Taijiquan, get it basecally, for advanced studies, latter studied Chen Chingping with Chen type the new frame Taijiquan, trained after many years he developed a unique style.

Sun Style (Founder: Sun Lutang)
